Elizabeth Mathew, daughter of an Irish Catholic who became a judge in England, and wife of the Irish nationalist leader John Dillon, kept a diary from the age of 14 until her death aged 42 in 1907 following the birth stillborn of her seventh child.
Her diaries portray a Victorian upbringing in London, with Irish interludes, her intense love of family, devout Catholicism and the fervent Irish nationalism that led her to marry John Dillon whom she idolised as well as loved.
The diaries are spiced by sharp observation of her fellow humans and illuminate with immediacy the several interesting worlds in which she passed her tragically short life.
