"The first volume of his Essays, published in 1597, contained only ten. There were several enlarged editions, and the final collection appeared in 1625 - fifty-eight essays, including revisions of the ofiginal ten. The present edition follows that of 1625, and includes also "Fame" and "The Praise of Knowledge."
