September 1953, 52 riders at the GPO in Dublin, a wet Saturday afternoon, the start of the firs Rás. Founded by young visionaries, some leading IRA figures, at a time of fraught political and sporting divisions in Ireland, the firs Rás symbolysed nationalist aspirations and Irish culture, along with the concept of a national stage race. As they took to the roads the dream became a reality. The Rás quickly became a national sporting event of enormous popularity, characterised by lack of conventional practice, flamboyance, spontaneity and fierceness of competition. It became unique in bike racing.
