Summary: The history of the Augustinians in Dublin is not merely the history of one particular friary, it is also the history in miniature of the Irish province of the order since Dublin was to become the central house of the order in Ireland. We shall see the order develop as a vicariate of the English province from its first foundation in Dublin, then as a semi-autonomous unit under a vicar general and, finally in 1624, the centre of authority shifted, for a time, to Dunmore in Galway where the friars maintained an uninterrupted existence for a longer period than in most other houses. -- Preface, ix.
