This book is a history of the many Waterford merchants who were forced to leave Waterford after they lost their power and trading livelihoods as a result of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in 1650. It deals, not only with the careers of these merchants in some of the port cities of France, Spain and the Spanish Netherlands in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but also with the lives of some of their families and descendants.
